The Dogecoin Foundation is working hard to make offline transactions possible through the Starlink satellites of Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The idea is to use cheap and reliable radio technology (HF/LoRaWAN) in conjunction with Starlink’s satellite network to build the infrastructure for Dogecoin internetless transactions. If the Dogecoin Foundation succeed in using the network with radio technology, this could be a solution for people in remote areas. In its announcement, the foundation mentions 1.7 billion people without a bank who will, in theory, be able to conduct their banking business through Dogecoin.

Dogecoin will not be the first

While it is an amazing achievement, Dogecoin will not be the first blockchain which you can use without an internet connection. Adam Back’s Blockstream managed to download the Bitcoin blockchain to a local node without an internet connection in 2017. Blockstream came up with this idea at the time to make the network more resilient. In theory, this would allow Bitcoin to survive even without the internet and allow people to stay up-to-date with the blockchain.
