Metaplanet is expanding its Bitcoin strategy into Hong Kong with a new $1 million asset-management subsidiary.

Japan’s Bitcoin-focused company Metaplanet is expanding its operations across Asia with a new wholly owned subsidiary in Hong Kong.

The company’s board approved the establishment of Metaplanet Asset Management Asia Limited on September 11, 2026. The new entity is scheduled to be established in Hong Kong during September and will be fully owned by Metaplanet.

According to the company’s official disclosure, the subsidiary will have initially planned capital of US$1 million.

Bitcoin-focused asset management

The new Hong Kong company will operate as a multi-strategy investment platform focused on Bitcoin-related assets.

Its planned activities include the management of client funds and proprietary capital through investments in Bitcoin, Bitcoin-related equities, preferred securities and credit products issued by Bitcoin treasury companies, as well as other related liquid financial instruments.

The move forms part of Metaplanet’s broader Project Nova strategy, which aims to develop the company beyond simply holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

The Hong Kong operation is intended to strengthen the group’s ability to execute trades and manage investments during Asian market hours.

From Bitcoin treasury to financial platform

Metaplanet has become one of Japan’s most prominent corporate Bitcoin holders. The company describes itself as a Bitcoin Treasury Company and has increasingly expanded its activities around Bitcoin-related financial services.

Its latest move represents a further step in that strategy.

Rather than concentrating all investment operations in Japan or the United States, Metaplanet is building a regional structure covering different financial markets and trading hours.

The company already operates Metaplanet Asset Management Inc. in the United States. The new Hong Kong subsidiary will complement that operation by providing an Asia-based platform.

Why Hong Kong?

Hong Kong has established itself as an important financial centre for digital assets in Asia.

For Metaplanet, establishing a local investment-management operation provides access to Asian trading hours and places the company closer to investors and financial markets across the region.

The location is also strategically relevant as Hong Kong develops its regulated digital-asset market.

Metaplanet’s decision therefore reflects not only its own Bitcoin strategy but also the growing importance of Hong Kong as an institutional hub for digital-asset finance.

A new business model around Bitcoin

Metaplanet’s strategy increasingly resembles a transition from a traditional corporate treasury model toward a broader Bitcoin financial-services business.

Bitcoin remains at the centre, but the company is now looking at asset management, securities, capital markets and investment products connected to the Bitcoin ecosystem.

The Hong Kong subsidiary is another building block in that expansion.

The company has stated that the impact of the new subsidiary on its consolidated financial results for the 2026 financial year is expected to be minor. Its significance is therefore primarily strategic rather than an immediate earnings driver.

For the Asian Bitcoin market, however, the move is notable. A Japanese publicly listed company is building dedicated Bitcoin-related investment infrastructure across multiple major financial centres.
