While the world keeps its eyes on Taiwan, South Korea, and the US, a new semiconductor hub has been quietly taking shape in Southeast Asia: Vietnam. An industry report by Acclime Vietnam sketched out the country’s ambitions back in 2024 – and today, in mid-2026, one thing is clear: much of it is no longer a statement of intent, but reality. And because chips underpin AI, mining hardware, and the entire digital infrastructure stack, this is a story worth following for our readers.
The Starting Point: A Market Growing at Double Digits
According to the report, Vietnam’s semiconductor market was estimated at around US$18.2 billion for 2024, with an annual growth rate of roughly 11.5 percent – projected to reach about US$31 billion by 2029. Notably, even back then, 12 percent of Qualcomm’s global revenue came from Vietnam – second only to China. Chip exports to the US had jumped 75 percent within a single year.

- 2024–2030: Establish Vietnam as a global hub for semiconductor talent, with over 50,000 engineers and industry revenue exceeding US$25 billion per year
- 2030–2040: At least 200 design firms, 2 domestic chip fabs, and 15 packaging and testing plants
- 2040–2050: 300 design firms, 3 fabs, 20 testing/packaging plants – and the ambition to lead globally in select segments
What Has Happened Since the Report – The Latest Developments in 2025/2026
This is where it gets interesting, because execution has moved faster than many expected:
1. The first domestic chip fab is under construction. In early 2026, Vietnam broke ground on its first high-tech semiconductor manufacturing plant – a symbolic milestone on the path to technological self-reliance. The project is led by telecom giant Viettel (which reports to the Ministry of Defence), with an initial investment of around US$100 million, later rising to as much as US$500 million.
2. Samsung is betting US$1.5 billion on Vietnam. In May 2026, Samsung announced its first chip testing plant in Vietnam (Thai Nguyen province), with an annual capacity of 409 billion gigabits of memory chips. That makes Vietnam a critical node in the global supply chain for AI memory.
3. Nvidia is turning Vietnam into an AI hub. Following the launch of the Vietnam R&D Center (VRDC) and an AI data center, Nvidia’s business in Vietnam grew by roughly 130 percent between 2025 and 2026. VRDC engineers now contribute directly to Nvidia’s global programs – from Speech AI to agentic systems and a Vietnamese large language model.
4. Over US$7 billion for AI data centers. By mid-2026, announced investments from G42, FPT, Viettel, and Nvidia are set to nearly double Vietnam’s compute capacity from around 525 MW to roughly 950 MW by 2030. 5. The ecosystem is growing measurably. Vietnam now counts more than 50 chip design firms employing around 7,000 engineers (up from 5,500 in 2024). 6. Cities are stepping up too. Ho Chi Minh City plans to offer grants of up to 15 billion VND (roughly US$570,000) per domestic chip design project – including full IP ownership rights for the funded companies, an unusually founder-friendly approach for a state program.
7. LG Innotek is bringing substrate production to Vietnam. In July 2026, South Korea’s LG Innotek — a key Apple supplier — received approval for a US$1 billion semiconductor substrate plant in Hai Phong, the first high-tech project in the city’s new Free Trade Zone. The facility will produce FC-BGA and other advanced substrates critical for AI and server chips, with mass production targeted for 2028 — effectively relocating part of South Korea’s chip supply chain to Vietnam.
The Macro Tailwind
Vietnam’s economy is growing at a rapid clip: GDP rose 8.4 percent in Q2 2026, and electronics exports topped US$71 billion in the first half of the year alone. The US Semiconductor Industry Association projects the country could grow its share of global packaging and testing capacity from under 1 percent to 8 percent by 2032 – surpassed only by Malaysia.
Why This Matters for the Crypto and AI Community
Three reasons:
Hardware supply chain diversification. Mining equipment, AI accelerators, and networking hardware all depend on a supply chain that is geopolitically concentrated in Taiwan and China. Every additional manufacturing and testing hub in Southeast Asia reduces that concentration risk.
Compute is going regional. With data center capacity set to nearly double by 2030 and Nvidia deeply embedded, Vietnam is building regional AI infrastructure – relevant to anyone betting on decentralized compute markets, DePIN projects, or regional AI services in Asia.
Regulation before scale. In 2025, Vietnam became the first country in Southeast Asia to pass a binding AI law – a pattern familiar to observers of the region’s crypto regulation debates: set the framework first, then attract the capital.

The 2024 Acclime report still read like a promise. Two years on, Vietnam is delivering. The country is moving step by step from pure packaging and testing toward its own manufacturing and design capabilities – backed by Samsung billions, Nvidia partnerships, and a government that has made the sector a top priority.
