The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has taken an unprecedented step in global migration policy by directly embedding blockchain infrastructure into its digital nomad visa framework. Rather than simply accepting cryptocurrency payments, the country requires applicants to participate in its sovereign digital asset ecosystem through a gold-backed token issued on Solana.
Administered by the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority (GMCA), the program requires digital nomad applicants to deposit the equivalent of $10,000 in TER tokens. This deposit is fully refundable, while an additional annual program fee of $2,800 is non-refundable. The visa grants an initial 12-month residency period, renewable up to 24 months under official guidelines.
TER debuted in December 2025 as what Bhutan describes as the world’s first sovereign gold-backed token issued on the Solana network. Each TER token represents fractional ownership of 0.01 grams of 999.9 purity physical gold stored in secure vaults. The token is issued by GMCA and managed through DK Bank, Bhutan’s regulated digital financial institution, effectively linking physical gold reserves to blockchain-based residency mechanics.
Solana was selected for its high transaction throughput, minimal fees, and energy-efficient architecture — characteristics that align with Bhutan’s carbon-negative development strategy. The refundable TER deposit functions as both a financial commitment mechanism and a structural introduction to the country’s state-backed digital asset framework.
Eligibility criteria focus on remote workers, entrepreneurs, and professionals whose activities align with the sustainability and innovation objectives of Gelephu Mindfulness City. Notably, there is no minimum income requirement and no mandatory physical stay threshold. In addition, the Sustainable Development Fee typically imposed on tourists is waived for participants in the program.
Applicants must open an account with DK Bank before acquiring and depositing TER tokens. Once approved, visa holders are free to reside and travel throughout Bhutan, including within Gelephu Mindfulness City, a special administrative zone designed to blend economic growth with mindful living principles.
Supporters argue that the refundable structure ensures commitment while channeling capital into TER adoption and strengthening Bhutan’s sovereign crypto infrastructure. Critics, however, question whether the $10,000 upfront commitment limits accessibility and raise concerns regarding taxation, token classification, and redemption mechanisms for the underlying gold reserves.
Infrastructure remains another consideration. Bhutan’s mountainous terrain and developing digital connectivity could pose challenges for remote professionals dependent on high-speed internet. Nevertheless, for crypto-aligned digital nomads, the appeal is significant: residency in one of the world’s most culturally distinctive nations, secured through a gold-pegged blockchain asset.
As digital nomad programs expand globally, Bhutan’s model stands apart. It does not merely integrate crypto payments — it restructures residency around tokenized sovereign assets. If successful, this initiative could mark the beginning of a new era in crypto-backed immigration frameworks, transforming gold, blockchain, and residency policy into a unified geopolitical experiment.
