On September 8, 2025, massive protests erupted in Nepal’s capital, later dubbed the “Generation Z protests.” The trigger was a ban on 26 popular social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube. The restrictions intensified public frustration with government officials suspected of corruption.
The demonstrations quickly escalated into violent clashes. Police used weapons against civilians, administrative buildings were ransacked, and fires broke out across the city. By the time of reporting, at least 30 people had died and more than 1,000 were injured. On September 9, Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli resigned, and the social media restrictions were lifted. The army expressed support for the people and sought dialogue with protesters.
BitChat Steps In
During the unrest in Nepal—and previously in Indonesia—the Bluetooth messenger BitChat emerged as a vital communication tool. Cut off from familiar social media, young people turned to the app to organize and share information. According to one of the developers, known as “calle,” downloads in Nepal surged to 48,781 on September 8, compared to just 3,344 a week earlier.

BitChat, created by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey in July 2025, relies on mesh network technology via Bluetooth Low Energy. It does not require internet access, account creation, or phone verification. Every device acts as a node, relaying messages up to 300 meters. A standout feature is “Panic Mode,” which instantly deletes all data after triple-tapping the app logo, ensuring maximum privacy.
Similar trends were seen in Indonesia, where downloads spiked during protests over new parliamentary perks and high housing allowances. These demonstrations, starting on August 25, resulted in six deaths and over 3,000 arrests before the government scrapped the perks on September 1.
No Connection to Bitcoin
Although BitChat uses decentralized technology similar to blockchain principles, it is not related to Bitcoin or any cryptocurrency. The app exists purely for encrypted and anonymous messaging, offering a secure communication channel during critical moments.
