When people talk about crypto in Thailand, one name almost always comes first: Bitkub. Since its launch in 2018, the Bangkok-based exchange has grown into the country’s dominant trading hub, with a market share once as high as 90 percent. Today it still handles the lion’s share of local crypto trading, moving tens of millions of dollars every single day.
What makes Bitkub stand out is its regulatory edge. It was among the first to secure a license from Thailand’s SEC, giving it legitimacy at a time when crypto exchanges across Asia were under intense scrutiny. That trust factor has helped the company grow beyond just another trading platform into something like a household name for Thai retail investors who want easy access to Bitcoin and altcoins using the local currency.
But Bitkub isn’t standing still. It has its sights set on a 2025 IPO on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, which would make it one of the first big crypto-native companies in Asia to go public in its home market. The exchange is also building new features: proof-of-reserve transparency, a programmable Thai baht stablecoin, and better security and support systems aimed at both local and international users. Its own token, KUB, plays a central role by offering lower fees and ecosystem benefits.
Still, the road hasn’t been without bumps. In 2021 the platform faced outages that triggered intervention by regulators. Users occasionally complain about drawn-out KYC checks, and competition is heating up as Binance and other global exchanges expand their presence in Thailand. Yet, despite these challenges, Bitkub continues to push forward—planning to grow its workforce to 3,000 by 2025 and cementing its place as the country’s gateway to Bitcoin and beyond.
For Asia’s crypto scene, Bitkub is more than just a local exchange. It’s a case study in how regulation, user demand, and bold expansion plans can collide to create a regional heavyweight. And if the IPO goes ahead as planned, Bitkub may become the first Thai crypto exchange to bridge the gap between the digital asset world and traditional finance in a very public way.
