Chiang Mai, Thailand, is increasingly evolving from a well-known hotspot for digital nomads into a secret Bitcoin city, where a vibrant community has emerged. Here, Bitcoin is not only seen as an investment but actively used as a tool for social education and to support remote hill tribes.

The city has long attracted digital nomads due to its high quality of life and affordability. Today, it has also become a center for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency enthusiasts, who jokingly call Chiang Mai a “secret Bitcoin city.”

A key hub for the scene is the Bitcoin Learning Center, co-founded by Jimmy Costro. The center focuses on education, community meetups, and research, especially on how Bitcoin can benefit disadvantaged communities in northern Thailand’s mountain villages. Beyond financial literacy workshops, the center installs internet and solar infrastructure, and even runs small Bitcoin mining projects to provide extra income for these villages.

The Bitcoin community in Chiang Mai is active and well-established. Since 2016, enthusiasts like Joe Nakamoto have regularly gathered for meetups, demonstrating real-world Bitcoin use—from paying for drinks to receiving Bitcoin tips.

Despite the active community, Bitcoin payments are not yet fully mainstream. While digital payment platforms like “Pompei” are common, cash remains widespread. Lightning Network technology is also still limited in use. Yet, early on-chain transactions at local restaurants indicate growing acceptance and potential for wider adoption.

Chiang Mai is a fascinating example of how a traditional Thai city can host a modern, digital, and Bitcoin-oriented community. Here, Bitcoin is more than an investment—it is a tool to empower local communities, promote education, and merge culture with technology.
